4 New Year Business Protection “Resolutions” for Contractors

As a freelancer or independent contractor, protecting your business and yourself from legal liabilities and health issues should be at the top of your priority list. Before you start making your personal new year’s resolutions, try implementing some of these business resolutions to help protect your status as an independent contractor in 2019.

  • Get in contact with old clientele. Are you looking to expand your business and take on new projects this year? Start with old clients from 2018! Word-of-mouth advertising is a great way to get your name out there, and you may be surprised how many previous clients have connections with potential new customers. If you did a particularly great job this year, don’t be afraid to get in touch with your previous clients for new work or projects.
  • Update your insurance. Though insurance for general liability in Arizona is required by law, independent contractors can take additional steps to secure their business against legal action and loss. Worker’s compensation, builder’s risk, and tools and equipment coverage can give you an extra layer of protection in the new year.
  • Learn to write a great contract. Short, incomplete, and out-of-date contracts are problems waiting to happen. Check out the previous contracts you used in 2018 and see where they can use tightening and more precise language. If you aren’t sure where to start, consulting with a local attorney can point you in the right direction.
  • Remember to take photos throughout the stages of a job. Photos of your work help protect you in the event that a disgruntled client attempts to claim that you did not fulfill your end of the contract. If you don’t already keep photos of your job sites at each stage of the process, try to implement a stricter photography schedule in 2019.
